Richard Turnbull: An English man defending the flag of his country
After only six months of its presence online, @bc proved itself to be one of the most visited tourist websites in Balneario Camboriu.
Being accessed form more than 30 different countries, we have decided to open a welcome page in both English and Spanish languages. To make a shortcut to these pages we have shown the flag of Spain to indicate the Spanish language and the flag of the United States of America to indicate the English language homepage.
Last week we have received an email from Mr. Richard Turnbull saying:
Good morning, the option to change language on this page is a US flag. The language spoken in the US is English. As an Englishman with a home in Balneario I think you should add the British flag; it was our language first...
The subject of the message was serious , the man was saying: it was our language first. and he is right.. This raised the discussion between us whether adding the British flag as he asked us to do or replace the american with the english one.
Some of us said that American English is different from the England English which means that both flags are suitable to represent the same language but differently, so we must keep the American flag, and others supported Richard's point of view especially knowing that both flags are equally recognized worldwide.
Our answer was:
Dear Mr. Richard Turnbull,
We see that your point of view is very interesting ... Because in the US they speak "english" ,which means that the british flag represents more the language than any other country like US, Australia, NewZealnad,etc... It is a fact : it was your language first...
We will make the right changes ASAP... We highly respect your attitude...
Finally we have decided that the English flag is going to say to the American flag : excuse me but this is my place.. and the American flag will answer : be my guest.
The replacement of the flags will be on Tuesday the 4th of September ..
Balneario Camboriu is a wonderful tourist city on the south atlantic known for its moderate weather, one of the rare cities in the world with lowest crime rate and high HDI level.
30 % of its visitors come from foreign countries, mainly from Latin America , North America and Europe .
